In textiles, the rubbing fastness of wet and dry fabrics is tested according to various standard specifications. The purpose of these tests is to determine the color fastness to rubbing of all types of textile materials. Usually color fastness is expressed in grey scales. AATCC Rotary Vertical Crockmeter is designed to in eliminating any subjective effects on load and friction rate that might affect the results.

To ensure the accuracy of the experiment, the samples need to be prepared before testing.

The fabrics used in this test must be allowed to come into condition as defined in ASTM D1776.

Crocking Cloth

This is a white unbleached, undyed cotton lawn material.

Note: if using SDC crocking cloth there is no face and back to the cloth and either side may be used for testing.

If using the Test fabrics crocking cloth there is a face and a back to the fabric. The following instructions should referred to:

The crockmeter test cloth squares have been cut from a single lot of production fabric. Each test square has a notch on one side to help the operator to align the square on the machine and enable the operator to identify the face side of the fabric.

With the notch in the lower right hand of the bottom of the square, the operator is viewing the face of the material. It is recommended that this side is used in contact with the material to be tested

2.Fabric to be Tested

The sample need not be cut to any specific size as long as an increased portion covers the metallic mounting plate.

Two specimens are required for dry testing and two for wet testing.

The two specimens for each must be such that one is assessed with the long direction parallel to the warp and other parallel to the weft. The wet test must be made with fresh dry samples and crocking cloths which have been wetted with water and squeezed to 100% take up (i.e. 10 grams of fabric is increased to 20 gm's of fabric plus water).
